Supergirl “Blood Bonds” Review: How to Take Down Your Crazy Aunt
Supergirl is back from its short winter hiatus to continues the story of Kara, Superman’s cousin who works for Cat Grant, head of CatCo Worldwide Media, and also fights crime as Supergirl with her sister in the DEO. Following up last episode’s cliffhanger, Supergirl captures her aunt Astra and loses the battle against Astra’s husband as he captures Hank Henshaw (AKA the Martian Manhunter). Meanwhile, Kara is having a hard time convincing Cat that she *isn’t* Supergirl, which might not be possible considering how tough a reporter Cat is.
Knowing Hank’s secret now makes the series more interesting and raises the stakes as his capture has more consequences than Kara realizes, making it a big priority to get him back. Astra and Maxwell Lord are proving to be good villains for Supergirl and her friends, Astra fighting her alien side while Lord ruining her human side. Seeing how they provide these conflicts within Kara and having her go through the toughest things she’s gone through so far is emotional and tough, even if the villains are a bit basic.
Meanwhile, Kara is fighting for her job at CatCo, as Cat Grant believes she is Supergirl and won’t stop pestering until Kara admits that she is. I’ve always loved the Cat/Kara relationship and Cat Grant as a character, so this storyline worked very well. It’s fascinating to see Cat go from an ally to a problem with a snap of your fingers. The solution to this is really great and possibly the funniest part of the show so far. I know eventually Kara will reveal herself to Cat, I just don’t know when, but I can’t wait.
There are other twists and turns in this episode that I’ll talk about in the fun notes as I don’t want to spoil them for people who have not seen this episode. But overall, the themes of family and deceiving appearances are well done and the show manages to be fun and light hearted while also providing great messages and emotional connections, something that I have not seen done this well in a superhero anything for so long. Being the highest rated superhero show on TV (thanks to CBS), we’re going to get this show for a while and I, for one, cannot be happier. We need Supergirl.
Fun Notes (SPOILERS):
-Now that Kara knows Hank is the Martian Manhunter, I hope we can see them team up and fight in the future! It was great to see him help her convince Cat Kara isn’t Supergirl, that was hilarious and touching at the same time.
-Maxwell Lord appears to be the major villain now, but I think he needs some work. He seems like a Lex Luthor knock-off, but there is much time to improve.
