In one of the latest bouts of celebrity written memoirs, comes Yes, My Accent is Real: And Some Other Things I Haven’t Told You by the famed Big Bang Theory actor, Kunal Nayyar, who plays Raj Koothrapali. The book is a collection of little stories from Kunal’s past that relate to everything from family, love, friendship, success and everyday situations, growing up in India and moving to the United States.
The book is a very quick read with 256 pages and a fairly simple verbiage. The little insights that Kunal gives in this book are nothing revolutionary but instead remind the reader to think of the little things in life. My favorite aspects of the book are when he discusses his family and his father in particular. There is something beautiful to the way he describes his family that just exudes love and admiration.
Another intriguing aspect of this book is when Kunal discusses coming to the United States for the first time and his various levels of adaption to American culture, whether in college with his friends or getting through every day life.
Between funny stories of his badminton days in India, to the process of him auditioning for The Big Bang Theory, the insights that Kunal provides are funny, entertaining and interesting. He doesn’t pretend to be something he is not, but rather just presents himself, what he has learned in this world and gives it to the reader. No pretenses, no fanfare, just Kunal.
The range of emotion in this book is much more than I expected. There were portions of the book where I was laughing out loud, and other portions where I was brought to tears. There is a short story in the book where he discusses leaving his family and India. It was so simple, but brought tears to my eyes.
If you are interesting in learning more about Kunal Nayyar and his past, you should definitely read this book. It is a quick fun read, that can be stopped and picked back up without losing any of its charm. Perfect for someone who has little time to read.
