The Creative Arts Emmys are an exciting time to celebrate the many talented artists and artisans who work behind the scenes to create our favorite television shows, specials, movies and more. From cinematography and costumes to title designs and music, every element of television art is celebrated in the lead up to the Primetime Emmy Awards.
But what can the Creative Arts winners tell us about what to expect next week? Do some series emerge as more likely winners over others? In a few ways, yes. In others, it’s a little harder to answer. For instance, the Creative Arts don’t always differentiate between comedy and drama and limited series, but by episode length. So for WandaVision to win over Ted Lasso in production design or The Queen’s Gambit to overtake The Crown for period costumes doesn’t say too much about vulnerabilities in comedy and drama series, but does show a fierce competition in limited series. Where WandaVision and The Queen’s Gambit will face off against another big Creative Arts winner: Mare of Easttown.
And we also saw a show of strength from two of The Crown‘s biggest challengers, The Mandalorian and Pose. The Billy Porter-led series won three prizes this weekend, after one previous Emmy for its leading actor. With Porter being a serious contender for the Lead Actor category next Sunday, the FX series could prevail for its third and final season. The Mandalorian is right there too, though, as a major tech player with seven wins so far. But The Crown is still very much in the mix with four Emmys, including one for guest star (and previous lead actress winner) Claire Foy.

In the Comedy lineup, the odds are still very much in favor of beloved Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, which picked up three statuettes for its creative team. The most significant of these is Theo Park’s win for Outstanding Casting in a Comedy Series. Her win was hardly a surprise. With Ted Lasso earning seven acting nominations — including four Supporting Actors — the TV Academy is a big fan of the cast and would naturally want to reward the woman who assembled them. What makes the win particularly important when it comes to next week’s results is the fact that the comedy Casting and Series winners have aligned every year since 2015. Not since the days of Modern Family‘s dominance did the categories split.
The casting/series connection isn’t as clear cut or consistent among the dramas, though. In the same time period, dramas have seen two splits. In 2018, The Crown picked up the Emmy for casting while Game of Thrones continued to take over the series awards. And in 2016, The Handmaid’s Tale became the first steaming drama to win while Stranger Things was rewarded for its casting. Look for some spreading of Emmy wealth as the acting, directing, writing, and series comedies could split in a number of different ways.

The three nights will be edited into one special presentation that will air on FXX next Saturday, followed by Sunday night’s 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards on CBS and Paramount+.
