Chloé Zhao made history at the 78th Golden Globes as the second woman — and first woman of color — to win Best Director. Zhao took home two awards as Nomadland also won the award for Best Motion Picture Drama. Sacha Baron Cohen was also a double winner as he and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm accepted statuettes for Best Actor and Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. Zhao is the first woman to win Best Director since Barbra Streisand won in 1984.
Pete Docter and Kemp Powers celebrated two wins for Soul, which won in the Animated Feature category, as well as the very competitive category of Original Score, in which Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor, and Atticus Ross won the prize. And after a lot of controversy over its category placement, Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari won Best Motion Picture — Foreign Language. In accepting the award, Chung said, “Minari is about a family. It’s a family trying to learn to speak a language of its own…It’s a language of the heart.”
Andra Day surprised with the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for The United States vs. Billie Holiday, and Chadwick Boseman posthumously won Best Actor for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
On the television side, Netflix’s royal series, The Crown, dominated with Best Television Drama Series, as well as lead performers Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor. And Gillian Anderson joined her castmates with a win for Supporting Actress. Schitt’s Creek also completed its run with Comedy Series and leading lady Catherine O’Hara.
Oscar voting opens this week, despite recent negative attention for the Hollywood Foreign Press, the fact is that the Golden Globes are still very influential in the awards race. Certain categories seem much more fixed now than they did this morning, while other contenders may have gotten much needed boosts to their campaigns.
