For the week of Feb. 18, HBO hit series Game of Thrones battles its way onto home media shelves for its third outing. The Complete Third Season is the sole wide release in big box retailers this week. Criterion is releasing 2009’s Fantastic Mr. Fox this week as part of its Criterion Collection.
After 20 episodes of film-scale battles, coupled with backstabbings and sexual excursions at every corner, Season 3 explores the characters of Westeros even further. Season 3 of Game of Thrones adapts the third novel of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice series.
Much of Game of Thrones is divided between the “War of the Five Kings” with House Stark, House Baratheon, House Lannister and House Greyjoy all vying for the Iron Throne. In the north, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and the Night’s Watch venture into the lands of the White Walkers. Far in the east, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) is hellbent on making her way back to Westeros to reclaim her birthright – the Iron Throne.
There are various retailer exclusive out there for the latest release of Game of Thrones. The standard release available is a seven-disc set (5 Blu-rays, 2 DVDs) featuring all 10 episodes. An UltraViolet Digital Copy code is also included in the package. Best Buy is offering three different slipcovers with House Stark, House Lannister and House Targaryen sigils.
Target’s exclusive includes a bonus disc with 90 minutes of content. On the disc, Emmy interviews are conducted with author Martin, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harrington and other cast members. Walmart also is offering a bonus disc featuring “Creating the World with Visual Effects.” Amazon is bundling an exclusive dragon statue with this latest season.
The other major release this week comes Criterion. Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox is being re-released on Blu-ray as part of the Criterion Collection. Based on the Roald Dahl children’s novel of the same name, Fantastic Mr. Fox tells the tale of a fox (George Clooney) who steals from three nasty farmers. Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Willem Defoe and Owen Wilson also lend their voice talents to the acclaimed film. This edition includes a Blu-ray and DVD.
