Last year, Disney CEO Bob Iger pleased many Pixar fans when he announced that the much-loved 2004 animated film The Incredibles would be getting a sequel. Fans have been chomping at the bit ever since for more information on the film.
During a recent interview with NPR, Incredibles director Brad Bird offered an update on The Incredibles 2. Bird said, “I’m just starting to write it, so we’ll see what happens.” He also said how the main idea of the film is currently “percolating.”
Considering how the film was announced in March of last year, it’s fairly surprising that Bird has only started working on the script now. While he probably has been hard at work on Tomorrowland, the upcoming George Clooney-led science fiction adventure film, The Incredibles 2 is slated for release in 2016, which really isn’t too far away. This most likely means that the film will not be released in 2016, and even 2017 may be a little early as well.
Very little information is known about The Incredibles 2 at the time, besides the fact that Bird is definitely returning to write the project.
The first Incredibles focused on a family of superheroes living in the suburbs, who must keep their powers hidden. When they are forced into action, the family must work together to save the world from an evil villain. The film starred Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson, Jason Lee, Spencer Fox, Sarah Vowell, Elizabeth Peńa and Brad Bird.
Throughout the course of his career, Bird has also directed such critically acclaimed films as The Iron Giant, Ratatouille and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.
On top of Clooney, Bird’s upcoming film Tomorrowland also stars Britt Robertson, Hugh Laurie, Judy Greer, Katherine Hahn, Tim McGraw and Keegan-Michael Key. The film will be released on May 22, 2015.
