BRIE LARSON, 51 ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCE NEW FILM ‘LADY BUSINESS,’ AS ‘UNICORN STORE’ HEADS TO NETFLIX IN NEW DEAL
Larson-starring ‘Lady Business’ to be produced by Brie Larson and 51 Entertainment, Unicorn Store to Debut on Netflix April 5
LOS ANGELES – January 31, 2019 – Academy Award winner Brie Larson and Lynette Howell Taylor’s 51 Entertainment are heading to Netflix in a deal that includes the announcement of Larson’s next starring role in the feature film, Lady Business, as well as the announcement of worldwide rights to her feature film directorial debut Unicorn Store.
After wrapping production on Unicorn Store, Larson and Howell Taylor joined forces with Endeavor Content to acquire the rights to develop Lady Business, based on a Fast Company article by John Paul Titlow. Based on a true story, Lady Business is about two young female entrepreneurs, Penelope Gazin and Kate Dwyer, who had to invent a third male company founder in order to be taken seriously in the business world. The deal also includes the duo’s life rights. Howell Taylor will produce the film alongside 51 Entertainment’s Samantha Housman and Larson. They will develop the project at Netflix as a starring vehicle for Larson who is also eyeing to direct.
Unicorn Store marks the feature film directorial debut of Academy Award-winning Room star Brie Larson. The dramedy is based on a script penned by Samantha McIntyre, and centers on a woman who moves back in with her parents, and receives an invitation to a store that will test her ideas of what it really means to grow up. The film which had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival stars Larson, Joan Cusack, Bradley Whitford, Mamoudou Athie, Hamish Linklater, and Samuel L. Jackson. It will premiere on Netflix on April 5, 2019.
Larson auditioned for Unicorn Store years ago and initially didn’t get the part. When the film didn’t get made, she took matters into her own hands to direct the film. Larson says “It’s not an easy time in the world right now so I hope that, in the old tradition of films being a form of escapism and a way to dream, this film can do that.” Unicorn Store was produced by veteran producer Lynette Howell Taylor under her 51 Entertainment banner along with David Bernad and Ruben Fleischer of The District and Rhea Films’ Terry Dougas and Paris Kasidokostas. The film was executive produced by Jean-Luc De Fanti, Nathan Kelly, Samantha McIntyre and Anne Woodward. It was co-executive produced by Kostas Tsoukalas.
Larson will next be seen in the title role of ‘Captain Marvel,’ the first female-led film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in theaters March 8, 2019 and recently wrapped ‘Just Mercy’ starring alongside Michael B. Jordan for Warner Bros. Howell Taylor just produced the Academy Award nominated A Star Is Born, which has grossed $400mn worldwide and has been nominated for awards including the Golden Globes, BAFTAS, Critics Choice, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Producers Guild Awards, and the Directors Guild Awards.
Larson is repped by WME and Authentic Talent and Literary Management and Robert Offer at Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern. 51 Entertainment is repped by WME and Barry Littman at Hansen Jacobson.
Endeavor Content negotiated both deals on behalf of the filmmakers.
