Yes, it looks like the hugely popular video game franchise Call of Duty that puts players smack dab in the middle of intense warfare with Nazis, terrorists – and even zombies – could be heading to the theaters. Director Stefano Sollima is rumored to be at the helm, and it sounds like he might have Tom Hardy and Chris Pine in mind to star.
Speaking with UK’s Metro in Milan, Sollima, who directed the upcoming Sicario 2: Soldano, gushed about both actors. On Hardy, the director said, “I mean, I like almost everything [he’s been in]. I’m waiting for his Venom. Even in Mad Max, he was great.” As for Pine, Sollima added, “He’s tough, but he’s smart and he can have a sense of humor but he can [also] be in such a dramatic role. I like when you feel that an actor can play with different nuances and tone because this means they’re a good actor.”
The director didn’t necessarily come right out and say he’d be pursuing the actors for Call of Duty, if and when the film is given the full green light, but one can instantly see them working together in such a scenario. Hardy and Pine are both pros at action and war movies, so they would be great. Plus, they’ve worked together before in the romantic action comedy This Means War.
I may be one of the only critics out there that really enjoyed this movie, which also starred Reese Witherspoon. The actors play top-level CIA operatives and best friends, who fall for the same woman (Witherspoon) and end up using their spy skills in a competition to see who can win her heart. It’s a hoot and Hardy and Pine are so damn cute in it. I wish Hardy would do a comedy again because he’s really not bad at it, at all.
Anyway, back to Call of Duty. Again, I’m not sure why it’s necessary to bring this video game to the big screen. It’s a war game. We’ve seen countless war movies. How will this stand out? I guess it’ll come down to a good story, as is always the case.
