News – Cumberbatch Prepares to Board the Enterprise

by Susan Shannon McCreadie

It was only a matter of time until we saw the next Star Trek movie heading into production. This film continues the story of the “young” Captain Kirk (played by Chris Pine in the last film and again here,) and his crew. News this week is that British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has signed on to play an “as yet to be named” bad guy. Cumberbatch can currently be seen in Spielberg’s “War Horse,” as well as the updated version of “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” His other work includes the role of Sherlock Holmes in the modern day version of the story, currently airing in the UK, as well as the film “Atonement.” And just to prove that Cumberbatch is an up and coming star, he’s also to appear in the eagerly anticipated “The Hobbit” from Peter Jackson.

No details yet on Captain Kirk’s next nemesis, but director JJ Abrams is thought to be paying homage to the evil character Kahn (played by Ricardo Montalban) from the original “Star Trek II,” by creating another legendary bad guy. Starring alongside Benedict Cumberbatch are returning actors Chris Pine, Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto among others. Production on this 3D film begins in the next several weeks, and is expected to be released in 2013.
