Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok Cast, Characters and Concept Art Revealed
Marvel has unveiled the full cast list for the upcoming 17th Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Thor: Ragnarok, and it features both veterans and newcomers to the Thor series alike.
First off, the list confirms that Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, who essentially disappears after the events of 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, will return in the film. Also, as was previously reported, two-time Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett and Creed actress Tessa Thompson have both officially been added to the cast. Thompson is set to play Asgardian warrior Valkyrie while Blanchett is on board to play “the mysterious and powerful new villain Hela.” In the comics, Hela is a frequent foe of Thor and possesses such abilities as black magic and telepathy. Unless Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 or Spider-Man: Homecoming beats the movie to it, which doesn’t seem likely, Ragnarok will be the first film in the MCU where the main supervillain is female.
For months, Blanchett and Thompson were both expected to join the cast, but, coming as more of a surprise, Jurassic Park actor Jeff Goldblum and Dredd actor Karl Urban have also signed on to the project. Similar to Benicio del Toro as the Collector, Goldblum’s role will be as Grandmaster, one of the Elders of the Universe, and Urban will take on the part of the extremely strong and intimidating Skurge.
Actors reprising their roles from 2011’s Thor and/or 2013’s Thor: The Dark World include Chris Hemsworth as the titular superhero Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Anthony Hopkins as Odin. Natalie Portman will not be reprising her role as Jane Foster for the third installment.
On the film’s cast, MCU producer Kevin Feige said, “The continuation of the epic Thor franchise will be powerful and unique, and with the additions of Cate, Jeff, Tessa, Karl, and Mark to the cast we have the makings of his most dangerous and heroic adventure yet. The sheer, raw talent each of these actors brings to the screen can’t be quantified. Having any one of them join the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be an honor, and having all of them is incredible.”
A piece of concept for art for the upcoming film was also released, and it can be seen below:
What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople director Taika Waititi will helm Thor: Ragnarok and Stephany Folsom, Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle will pen the script. The film will swing into theaters on November 3, 2017.
