New ‘Blockers’ Trailer: Laugh-Riot or Not?

The latest trailer for the upcoming Blockers further highlights the lengths three different parents will go just so their daughters don’t lose their virginity on prom night, but it still doesn’t inspire a lot of faith in me that this will be a good comedy.

The official synopsis is as follows: Lisa (Leslie Mann), Hunter (Ike Barinholtz) and Mitchell (John Cena) learn that their teenage daughters plan to lose their virginity on prom night. The worried parents soon embark on an all-night quest to stop the girls from sealing the deal.

The trailer starts out with Cena’s Mitchell finding a pink, lacy thong in the laundry. Thinking it belongs to his wife, he gets all sexed up on her, putting it in his mouth like he’s going to chew it off her later – until his wife informs him that it’s his daughter’s pair. [Cue sound of record scratching] Yeah, didn’t see that coming. Mitchell then laments the fact his baby girl is growing up (and what dad doesn’t).

Cut to the three parents watching their daughters get into the limo with their prom dates. It seems Barinholtz’s Hunter might be an estranged dad who doesn’t see his daughter very much, while Mann’s Lisa might be a tad overprotective. Then we get to the meat of it when they discover their daughters are making a sex pact after the adults inadvertently see their kids’ text conversation on one of the girl’s computers, using an eggplant and a finger pointing as an OK emojis as symbols. Time to stop them before the girls make bad choices – and also have a night from hell including exploding cars and chugging beer from your butt. Good times!

I think my real issue with Blockers overall is what parent would really do this? It seems like a pretty flimsy premise and just an excuse for balls-out shenanigans with no real purpose. What this movie does have going for it is a fun cast, so maybe Mann, Barinholtz, and Cena can make this comedy zing, and we can look the past the fact the main plot makes no real sense. It’s not like it hasn’t happened before.

Blockers opens in theaters April 6.
