Idris Elba might not be a name you’re familiar with, but over the weekend he won a Golden Globe for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made For Television.” The reason you may not recognize his name, is that Elba is British and the series he won for is a BBC production called “Luther.” The actor has, however, done several turns in international released films including Guy Ritchie’s “RocknRolla” and last year’s surprise hit “Thor,” directed by Kenneth Branagh. And, for those that made “Thor” the success that it was, we can report that Elba has confirmed his return to the big screen in the 2nd Thor film, reprising his role as Heimdale, gatekeeper of Asgard.
There are a few other films that will be keeping Idris Elba busy in the meantime and probably garnering him much more press coverage in the coming year. The actor is currently finishing up shooting on “Pacific Rim,” a film directed by Guillermo del Torro and a role that it is rumored Tom Cruise wanted for himself. Elba will also appear in Ridley Scott’s Alien-inspired (and maybe even a prequel) “Prometheus,” with Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron and Patrick Wilson.
If you’re interested in seeing his award-winning performance in “Luther,” the program is available on DVD.
