A Quiet Place director John Krasinski is lining up his next project, while the Fast & Furious spin-off featuring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham gets a director. Here are some of the projects announced this past week.
John Krasinski Is Headed to Mars
Now that the surprise horror hit A Quiet Place has firmly planted John Krasinski on the map, the director is already moving into development on his next gig, a film called Life on Mars. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will be an adaptation of a short story by Cecil Castellucci titled We Have Always Lived on Mars and will center on “a woman who is among a handful of descendants of a Martian colony long-abandoned by Earth following a cataclysm. The woman one day finds she can breathe the air on Mars, upending her world and that of her fellow colonists.” Krasinski will probably stay behind the camera this time and plans to produce with his Quiet Place team. Definitely sounds intriguing.
Director David Leitch to Helm Fast & Furious Hobbs/Shaw Spin-Off
Fasten your seatbelts. Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde director David Leitch has signed on to helm a spin-off film centered on Fast & Furious characters Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, played by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, respectively. EW.com reports the film has been rumored to be called Hobbs and Shaw and will be in theaters July 26, 2019. With Leitch behind the wheel, you can certainly expect major action sequences since the dude used to be a stunt double/coordinator. I have a feeling he’s totally going to get along with Johnson and Statham.
Batgirl Gets the Go-Ahead with New Female Writer Onboard
After Joss Whedon bowed out of doing the Batgirl movie for Warner Bros. a few months ago, many thought it might be dead in the water. But no! It looks like the studio has found a new voice to take over, screenwriter Christina Hodson, who also wrote the upcoming Transformers spin-off Bumblebee.
According to THR, Hodson has already written the Batgirl character, having helped to develop a feature project based on the all-female crime-fighting group Birds of Prey, and wrote the thriller Unforgettable, starring Katherine Heigl and Rosario Dawson. Hmmm. We’ll see how this shakes out.
A ‘Bourne’ Prequel Pilot Ordered by USA Network and More
USA Network handed out four new pilot orders, including a new potential series Treadstone, which would show what happened before super-assassin Jason Bourne went rogue. Heroes‘ Tim Kring would be the showrunner, and THR reports would “explore the origin story and present-day actions of a CIA black ops program known as Treadstone — a covert operation that uses behavior modification protocol to turn its agents into nearly unstoppable superhuman assassins. The series follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously ‘awakened’ to resume their deadly missions.” I’d watch this for sure, but Kring does not have the best track record since Heroes, including a failed attempt to reboot it. Still, if it’s cast right, could be really good.
