Coming off of the fairly disappointing box office numbers for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony has announced a female-led superhero film that will take place in The Amazing Spider-Man universe. This is a bold but extremely exciting move by Sony considering that there has been a surprising lack of female-led superhero movies over the past couple of years. The film is set to come out in 2017.
This news comes after Sony’s announcement that they would be releasing a Sinister Six film in 2016, while delaying The Amazing Spider-Man 3 until 2018. The only problem is that while there are many potential female superheroes in this universe, few are well-known properties. Some of these characters include Black Cat, played by Felicity Jones in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Spider-Woman, Silver Sable, Stunner, and Firestarter.
Sony has been quiet on the details of the film so far but this decision should give them a much-needed leg up on Warner Bros., and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, considering that there are many comic book fans desperate to see a female-led superhero movie.
