“Star Trek 3” May Be Titled “Star Trek Beyond”

AP WRITERS GUILD AWARDS A ENT

The third installment in the rebooted Star Trek film series will most likely be titled Star Trek Beyond.

The site that initially reported the news, TrekMovie.com, said they have it on “good authority” that this will be the film’s title, as it was the one submitted to the Motion Picture Association of America. They did, however, say that it was entirely possible that the name is a decoy being used by Bad Robot to prevent fans from finding out the actual name of the film.

The exact meaning of the title is unknown, but it may have something to do with the fact that the filmmakers are interested in taking the characters deeper into space and the unknown worlds of the Star Trek universe, instead of making a more Earth-centric Star Trek film.

Star Trek 3 (or Star Trek Beyond) follows both 2009’s Star Trek and 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness. It will also be the first rebooted Star Trek film not directed by JJ Abrams, who was too busy with Star Wars: The Force Awakens to handle to project. Instead, Fast and Furious franchise director Justin Lin is set to helm the film.

Actors reprising their roles from the previous two films include Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg and John Cho. Recently, Kingsman: The Secret Service actress Sofia Boutella joined the cast as well.

On top of that, Pegg, who is co-writing the film with Doug Jung, all but confirmed that The Wire and Pacific Rim actor Idris Elba will also be in the film.

In an interview with MTV, Pegg said, “Idris is an extraordinary actor and we’re trying to write him a kickass role.”

Abrams, Bryan Burk and Roberto Orci will all produce the upcoming film, which is set to begin filming in June.

Star Trek 3 will hit theaters on July 8, 2016.
