Even though Star Wars Episode VII is still shooting, the wheels are already turning for the next installment with the announcement of Rian Johnson as the writer and director for Star Wars Episode VIII.
Johnson most recently directed the surprise time travel hit ‘Looper’, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis. He also directed Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Brick. Does this mean we may get JGL in a Star Wars movie? We will have to wait and see. I personally think Johnson is an excellent choice for the film and look forward to seeing what he comes up with.
Choosing Johnson follows Disney’s trend of hiring upcoming directors for Star Wars projects, rather than veterans. Godzilla director Gareth Edwards and Chronicle director Josh Trank were recently chosen to direct two stand-alone Star Wars films.
While many will be sad to know J.J. Abrams is only doing Star Wars: Episode VII, I think J.J. will help set the precedent for the series that other directors will follow. What say you, Filmsters? Does the announcement of Rian Johnson excite you? Make you cringe? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
