Trailer: Andrew Garfield Goes ‘Under the Silver Lake ‘

It looks like Andrew Garfield is slipping down a slippery slope in this creepy trailer for Under the Silver Lake.

The film’s synopsis says that it centers on a man named Sam (Garfield) who becomes obsessed with the strange circumstances of a billionaire mogul’s murder and the kidnapping of a girl. How the trailer starts out, though, grabs you immediately.

Sam likes watching his cute neighbor, Sarah (Riley Keough), and when she takes a late-night swim, she entices him to join in. There are a few shots of the two of them flirting and definitely hooking up a little, and it seems like the movie might be about their relationship.

But no. The next day, Sam goes over to see Sarah and she’s disappeared, with her apartment totally cleared out. This is when the trailer starts down the rabbit hole, as Sam begins seeing codes and secret messages in everything. He is convinced it may be leading him somewhere he’s meant to be, perhaps to rescue Sarah, all while dragging him into the underbelly of Los Angeles. And from what I can ascertain some of what Sam is experiencing might only be in his head. I love that stuff.

Under the Silver Lake is from the same filmmaker, David Robert Mitchell, who gave us the ultra-creepy horror film It Follows, a truly a one-of-a-kind mind-bender. The fact the only horror comes from being followed – slowly, mind you – by some supernatural force after being passed the “virus” by a sexual encounter. Never seen a horror film like it, and it got way under my skin.

While I don’t think Under the Silver Lake is going to scare me like that, it does have a weird vibe. Plus, it’s great to see Garfield playing grungy and modern again after being in a few period dramas, like Breathe, Silence and Hacksaw Ridge.

Under the Silver Lake dips into theaters June 22.
