This Is Us Pilot Review: A Beautiful Montage of Life & Love
This Is Us is a new Fall show premiering on NBC in a few short months. The show is a montage show of various people living their lives and trying to get through the every day struggles. Through wonderful storytelling and character development, we learn that there is a little more to the reason these people are selected. In the short pilot episode, there is so much raw and powerful emotions, it is sure to be an absolute hit.
The show stars Mandy Moore as Rebecca, Milo Ventimiglia as Jack, Justin Hartley as Kevin, Chrissy Metz as Kate, Chris Sullivan as Toby and Ron Cephas Jones as William. All of these people have their own stories and we become acquainted with them as the story unfolds. Kate is an overweight woman struggling to lose weight and be happy with herself when she meets Toby at a meeting for people wanting to lose weight. They instantly hit it off and have some pretty funny dialogue back and forth. It is extremely refreshing to see a plus size story played out where the main focus isn’t necessarily comedy. There are comedic elements but also there are some really emotionally rousing scenes where you really feel for the characters. Meanwhile we have Kevin, the overly attractive actor who feels like he isn’t living up to his potential. He is not necessarily stupid, but doesn’t feel like he knows if he’s worth more than what he is currently doing. Rebecca and Jack are about to have triplets and they face some challenges in the delivery. There are some incredibly powerful scenes in their story that are truly emotional. William is trying to find his birth father who left him at a fire station when he was a baby. All these people and all these stories are each beautifully developed and so beautifully told that you have an instant interest in their lives and their well-being. The characters are all so lovable and emotionally rich that you can’t help but feel for them.
This Is Us is one of the most captivating and engaging television shows I have seen in a very long time. The casting is spot on and the performances are so elevated that they blow me away. The storytelling, writing, acting, and even cinematography are top-notch, weaving a wonderful narrative filled with love, laughter, tears and sorrow all in one short episode. I can’t wait to see what they do with an entire season. This girl is HOOKED!
