KEVIN (PROBABLY) SAVES THE WORLD – “Pilot” – Kevin Finn (Jason Ritter) is not a good person. He’s not terrible, but he’s selfish and clueless and values material wealth and status over all else. And he’s beginning to realize that those things aren’t making him happy – in fact, he’s fairly miserable. Just when things seem to be at their worst, he finds himself tasked with an unbelievable mission: saving the world. “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World,” a unique one-hour drama filled with hope, heart and a good dose of irreverent humor, premieres TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. (ABC/Ryan Green)

Kevin (Probably) Saves the World “Pilot” Review
Kevin, played by Jason Ritter, is a guy who has lost his way in life and has moved back in with his sister, Amy (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) and niece, Reese (Chloe East). One night there is a massive meteor that strikes near the house, and as he and Reese investigate, something happens, and he begins to experience weird events and even has a new friend, Yvette (Kimberly Hebert Gregory). The result is a bizarre 45 minutes of something that will change his life forever.
The pilot episode does a fantastic job of setting up the story and the characters to keep the audience engaged and eager to see the next episode. Kevin’s character has multiple layers that I’m sure will unfold throughout the season. The chemistry between Kimberly Herbert Gregory and Jason Ritter is spot on and perfect. Their back and forth really gives the show the comedic oomph it needs. The characters together establish great rapport and comedy that will be sure to carry the show throughout the season. The relationship between Amy, Reese, and Kevin is still developing and changing as the pilot continues so I’m sure that will be another huge focal point of the show. It will allow for some great emotionally gripping moments to balance out the comedy in the show.

The storyline deals heavily with the idea of God and religion, which can be okay. My concern is that the show needs to focus less on a religious take on what has to happen and more of “general well-being and goodness for humanity.” I get very nervous when shows tack on a little bit of a religious theme because it can be a very touchy subject for audiences. If handled correctly, I think this show could take off and be one of the best shows of the fall.
The pilot establishes a great story and set of characters which I’m sure audiences will adore. It opens the door for so many opportunities for humor, personal growth and a strong emotional core to the show. Kevin Probably Saves the World is the must-see new comedy of the fall season!
