Concert Review: Holiday Movie Nostalgia Hits all the Right Notes in CineVita’s “Tinselcolor”

Kevin Taft reviews Tinselcolor: Holiday Soundtracks Live, which he describes as a cinematic snow globe come to life.

For The Record has done it again! They’ve crafted a Technicolor – sorry, Tinselcolor: Holiday Soundtracks Live – musical spectacular that wraps the soundtracks of our favorite movies in a warm, festive holiday bow. Performed inside The CineVita’s handcrafted, one-of-a-kind Spiegel tent (think “vintage circus glamour meets holiday postcard”), the audience doesn’t just watch the show; they step inside it. It’s a cinematic snow globe come to life, celebrating the films that warm our hearts every December and pump pure peppermint into our veins.

And as always with the For the Record family, the performers are the reason you go. Creator Shane Scheel and director Anderson Davis know precisely how to fill a stage (or a tent!) with powerhouse talent, and this ensemble proves it.

Leading the charge is the playful and magnetic Brian Justin Crum (Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl), whose swoony brawn and jaw-dropping vocal range could melt the polar ice caps. Cheyenne Isabel Wells (Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies) moves effortlessly from belting barnburners to sweet, shimmering holiday tenderness. Ty Taylor, the irrepressible front man of Vintage Trouble, struts in with showman swagger and a voice that oozes mid-century velvet. And then there’s Dionne Gipson (Pee Wee’s Big Holiday), whose iconic pipes can shake ornaments off a tree, in the best possible way.

They’re joined by the irresistibly charming Brayden Gleave (Love Actually Live!), who brings youthful energy and sharp comedic chops that fit this show like maple syrup on spaghetti. (That’s a good thing, don’t you know!)

Presiding over this holiday fantasia is none other than Joey McIntyre of the legendary New Kids on the Block. With amiable swagger, terrific vocals, and an effortless host’s touch, McIntyre guides us through the nostalgia, the memories, and the mischief that define the season and the movies we love.

The song list is pure joy: tunes from Love Actually, Home Alone, Die Hard (yes, you read that right), plus classics like “Baby It’s Cold Outside” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” And just wait until you hear Crum sashay through Jack Skellington’s ode “What’s This?” from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Music director Gregory Nabours and arranger/orchestrator Jesse Vargas deliver dazzling, re-imagined versions of every number; rich, cinematic, and downright goosebump-worthy.

In short, Tinselcolor is the perfect addition to your holiday calendar. It’ll launch you straight into the festive spirit and send you out through The CineVita’s gorgeous wooden doors humming Christmas classics with a grin you can’t quite shake.

A little nostalgia, a lot of talent, and enough holiday sparkle to light up the season. What more could you wish for?

“Tinselcolor: Holiday Soundtracks Live” runs through December 30th at The Cinevita at Hollywood Park by Sofi Stadium.

He cried the moment Benji appeared onscreen in “Benji,” and it took him about four times to finally watch “The Exorcist” (at age 24) without passing out. “Star Wars: A New Hope” was the movie that changed everything and when his obsession with films and filmmaking began. A screenwriter himself (one long-ago horror script sale to New Line remains on a shelf), his first film "Two Tickets to Paradise" that he co-wrote premiered in June 2022 on Hallmark. He is currently working on another for the iconic brand.
