Nick Casaletto: Alien: Covenant (6/10)
In the end, Alien: Covenant is a great companion piece to Prometheus. Both films would be excellent if they had nothing to do with the Alien universe. Think about it, we wouldn’t be sitting here trying to compare what should be two great, original science fiction movies, to Alien and Aliens. This is a franchise that didn’t need an expanded universe or a mythology as to how the Xenomorphs came into existence. However, there is this little thing called money, and studios love their money. So, as long as we keep paying to see them, they will continue to get made.
Tony Estrada: Alien: Covenant (3/10)
Ridley Scott delivers beautiful visual effects, great R-rated violence, and a couple of exciting moments but those are unfortunately not enough to save this idiotic and uninspired sequel. The feature thinks it’s being smart when it’s really being beyond idiotic and it continues to get even more questionable as the movie keeps going. It has the look of an Alien movie but it doesn’t capture the magic of Alien or Aliens only adding material we have seen before in other Alien movies. The characters in Prometheus are Albert Einstein compared to the characters in this sequel because the decisions that these characters make are even more foolish. Alien: Covenant infuriated me so much and it gets worse the more I think about it because Ridley Scott and his writing team really could have brought something new to this franchise but instead they end up delivering a sequel that is lazy, dumb, messy, and tremendously predictable.
Daniel Rester: Alien: Covenant (7.2/10)
Ridley Scott’s latest entry in the “Alien” franchise is uneven and predictable at times, but it still packs a number of thrilling sci-fi horror elements. The visual effects and music are top-notch, as expected, but it’s Michael Fassbender that steals the show as both Walter and David. Katherine Waterson and Danny McBride also do some fine work, while mostly everyone else is expendable. This is a solid and gruesome entry in the franchise, though it never reaches the cerebral ambitions of “Prometheus” or the masterfully entertaining level of “Alien” or “Aliens.”
Mark Krawczyk: Alien Covenant (7.5/10)
I enjoyed this film more than Prometheus in many ways. Namely because the tone and feel of the film felt closer to the original Alien and Aliens, at times almost too close. This did not take me out of the film at all but may turn people off to it. I thought there were some great actual tense moments in the film and the story adds some interesting facts about the origins of the Aliens that we love. Fassbender puts in a great performance and the Aliens themselves were a lot better from Prometheus. The film does get more predictable as it goes on and there is a bit of stumbling in the pacing. There were some very exciting action scenes in here, I loved the gore and horror elements as well. I felt I got my money’s worth. How you feel about this film I think depends on your expectations. I have settled that these films will not be like the originals despite their need to try and connect them to those films. I just sit back and enjoy the fact we still have people making rated R sci-fi horror films.
Zachary Marsh: Alien Covenant (8/10)
Aside from some issues in character development and the fact that this may be the most predictable movie of 2017, I highly enjoyed Alien: Covenant. The action is fun, the gore is spectacular, the cinematography is great, and the acting is strong, particularly from Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, and Danny McBride. Not as good as Prometheus, in my opinion, but still very much worth your time, even if the cliches are too obvious in today’s day and age.
Average We Live Film Gradebook Score for Alien: Covenant: 6.3/10
