It looks like Paul Feig won’t be the only director helming a Ghostbusters reboot film, as Sony Pictures has announced that a male-driven Ghostbusters film is also in the works.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo are reportedly in talks to direct and produce the project, with Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible 5 writer Drew Pearce penning the script.
Sony is also setting up a new production company named “Ghost Corps” to create more Ghostbuster films. Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd, director and star of the original Ghostbusters, will head up the company to help expand the Ghostbusters universe through multiple films, TV shows and merchandise. Tom Pollock, Ali Bell and Alex Plapinger will also contribute to “Ghost Corps.”
Actor Channing Tatum is attached to produce the project along with Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan, and if all goes as planned, he might star in the film as well.
Both Tatum and the Russo Brothers have very busy schedules, so it will very interesting to see how this film fits in. The Russo Brother will be helming 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and also might direct Avengers: Infinity War in 2018 and 2019. Tatum, on the other hand, will be starring in an X-Men spinoff film entitled Gambit, as the title character. He also has multiple other projects due out over the next couple of years.
On the film, Reitman said, “We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment. This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”
Feig’s Ghostbusters film will star Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy and Kate McKinnon.
