Marvel and Sony Officially Cast Tom Holland as Spider-Man

Tom Holland, star of The Impossible, has officially been cast as Marvel and Sony’s new Spider-Man.

For months, there has been a massive amount of speculation about who will play the role of web-slinging teenager Peter Parker. At first, it looked liked the part would be going to Ender’s Game and Hugo actor Asa Butterfield, but he was taken out of the running not too long ago. It was reportedly down to Holland and Charlie Plummer, with Sony backing Holland and Marvel backing Plummer.

Holland is a 19-year-old actor from the U.K., who has also had parts in such projects as The Secret World of Arrietty, Locke, Wolf Hall, and such upcoming films as Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea, Pilgrimage and Backcountry.

Producer Amy Pascal said, “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world. With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

The studios also announced that the standalone Spider-Man film, set to be released in 2017, will be directed by Jon Watts. Watts is a relatively unknown filmmaker, who is perhaps best known for writing and directing this year’s Sundance thriller Cop Car, starring Kevin Bacon and Shea Whigham.

On hiring Watts, Marvel president Kevin Feige said, “As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life. We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”

Holland’s Spider-Man will most likely make his first Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance in next year’s Captain America: Civil War. After that, his solo film will hit theaters on July 28, 2017.
