Before the trailer, very little footage had been released of Ant-Man; therefore, many fans were unsure what the tone of the film would be and what direction it would be going in. The trailer certainly gives us a much better idea of what to expect from Ant-Man when it hits theaters on July 17, 2015.
With a voice-over running throughout, spoken by Michael Douglas, the Ant-Man trailer may not have shown as much action or excitement as many fans were hoping for, but it certainly did its job in beginning to introduce a comic book superhero as silly and strange as Ant-Man to mainstream audiences.
Perhaps what’s most surprising about the trailer is that Ant-Man doesn’t seem to be the full-out comedy many were expecting. Obviously, it’s too early to make any real judgments or assumptions about the film, as we’ve only seen about two minutes worth of footage, but most of the comedy we know we will be getting in Ant-Man was absent from the trailer.
A highlight of the trailer includes seeing Paul Rudd, who will be playing Scott Lang/Ant-Man, in his Ant-Man costume, shrinking down to “ant size.” Although Rudd barely speaks at all in the trailer, we do get to see many shots of him and hear a part of his backstory through Douglas’ narration. From what is said, it seems that Rudd is an ex-convict who is offered redemption in the form of donning the Ant-Man costume.
The film is directed by Peyton Reed and also stars Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Michael Peña, Judy Greer, Bobby Cannavale and many more.
Ant-Man may not have stood out in the same way Guardians of the Galaxy did in its first trailer, but it’s certainly a start. Ant-Man may very well be on its way to getting a hardcore fan-base of its own.
