The 86th Academy Awards nominations have been officially announced. Gravity and American Hustle lead the pack with 10 nominations apiece. Steve McQueen’s period drama, 12 Years a Slave follows closely behind with 9. All three films are nominated for Best Picture.

From now until the March 2 ceremony, analysts will be predicting the frontrunners and winners down to the wire. But before attempting to sift through the what-ifs come Oscar night, take in first what’s actually been nominated. What hasn’t? And how have previous Oscar trends affected this year’s set of nominees.

With surprises and omissions here and there, the nominations this year weren’t that big of a shock. The Golden Globes and other awards shows foreshadowed what is to come this season. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s going to be a simple, quiet race.
