A recently released photo, taken by Annie Leibovitz, has revealed Andy Serkis’ character in this year’s upcoming film Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The actor will be playing a character named Supreme Leader Snoke. The picture seen below, with the actor front and center, was attached to an interview on StarWars.com with Leibovitz about her career and recent Vanity Fair shoot for the film.
Serkis, best known for his motion capture work in such films as The Lord of the Rings, King Kong and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, will be returning to motion capture for The Force Awakens, after turning in a real life performance as Ulysses Klaue in this month’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
There were some discussions about whether or not Serkis himself would be acting in the film, or if he would be turning in another mo-cap performance, but the picture above certainly answers that question.
Disney and Lucasfilm have certainly been taking their time with revealing the names of the characters we will be seeing in The Force Awakens. The last character reveals, which included Gwendoline Christie’s Captain Phasma, a chrome trooper, and Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata, a pirate, were on May 4 aka Star Wars Day.
Other confirmed character names include Finn (John Boyega), Rey (Daisy Ridley), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). The characters actors such as Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Warwick Davis and Greg Grunberg will be playing are still unknown.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters on December 18, 2015.
