J.A. Bayona Tapped to Direct Jurassic World 2

J.A. Bayona

After being the rumored frontrunner for the job for a few months now, J.A. Bayona has been tapped to direct Universal’s Jurassic World follow-up, Jurassic World 2

The news was confirmed earlier today by Jurassic World director and co-writer Colin Trevorrow and producer Frank Marshall on Twitter with the following posts:

While Bayona will be taking over directorial duties, Trevorrow is set to once again pen the film’s screenplay with frequent collaborator Derek Connolly and executive produce with Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg.

Beginning in 1993 with Jurassic Park, Jurassic World 2 will be the fifth installment in the long-running film franchise.

For those who aren’t familiar with Bayona and his work, he helmed both 2007’s The Orphanage and 2012’s The Impossible, two well-received films that earned him a slew of international awards. His latest project, A Monster Calls, which stars Felicity Jones, Sigourney Weaver, Liam Neeson and Toby Kebbell, is due out in October.

Jurassic World, of course, went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of all time when it was released last year, bringing in a total of $1.67 billion worldwide on a $150 million budget, and blew away even the most extreme box office predictions. It ended up becoming the second biggest film of 2015, coming in right behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Speaking of Star Wars, although Trevorrow isn’t returning to the director’s chair for the upcoming sequel, he will be directing 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX for Disney and Lucasfilm, after he finishes The Book of Henry, which will most likely be released this year.

Jurassic World 2 is scheduled for release on June 8, 2018 and June 22, 2018 in the UK and US, respectively; Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will return.
