The group, which consisted of such members as Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, MC Ren and DJ Yella, came together in 1986 and quickly began to make some of the time’s most honest and fiery music. The film will chronicle the rise and fall of N.W.A., highlighting what made the band and it’s members so unique and different.
N.W.A. is widely regarded as one of the most important groups in the history of rap; in fact, they led the way for many future rappers in the industry. Their impact on the genre is immeasurable, so a film certainly has a lot of potential to tell a compelling story of exactly how the group revolutionized the music industry and the controversy that surrounded them during their years of fame.
The cast of the film includes Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, O’Shea Jackson Jr. (the real life son of Ice Cube) as Ice Cube, Aldis Hodge as MC Ren and Neil Brown Jr. as DJ Yella. Also, Paul Giamatti will play N.W.A. manager Jerry Heller.
Such rap icons as Suge Knight and Snoop Dogg will also be represented in the film through actors R. Marcus Taylor and Keith Stanfield.
The Negotiator and The Italian Job director F. Gary Gray helmed the film. Gray also worked with Ice Cube on his 1995 film Friday, which Ice Cube co-wrote with DJ Pooh.
Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Tomica Woods-Wright, David Engel, Matt Alvarez and Bill Straus all produced the film, while Jonathan Herman, Alan Wenkus, S. Leigh Savidge and Andrea Berloff penned the script.
Straight Outta Compton will hit theaters on August 14, 2015.
