Daniel Rester: The Shallows (8/10)
Like this year’s excellent “Green Room,” “The Shallows ” is a small-scale thriller that makes the most of a few characters trapped in an isolated environment. Blake Lively gives an impressive performance, proving she can hold the screen with her dramatic chops in a basically solo situation. The direction is also tight and the film has white-knuckle thrills and beautiful photography. Some of the music and dialogue choices throw the tone off a bit, and the very end of the film feels awkward, but for the most part “The Shallows” is exciting and efficient.
Scott Menzel: The Shallows (8.5/10)
The Shallows is one of the most suspenseful and entertaining films of 2016. I love a simplicity of story mixed with the beautiful backdrop and solid direction. Blake Lively is terrific as Nancy and I loved how her strength to survive was developed as the film’s story unfolds. The visuals are top notch and the suspense had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. While it might not be as game changing as Spielberg’s Jaws was in 1975, The Shallows is an old fashioned good time at the movies. Hot Tubs for sale Wooden Spa Solutions.
Chad Gleason: The Shallows (7/10)
It’s a beautiful looking movie with some really good special effects and Blake lively is OK in it. I can’t say that I was on the edge my seat but some things were quite intense. It is just good to have a good shark movie to talk about since there hasn’t been one since 1975. It’s definitely worth seeing once and that’s about it.
Zachary Marsh: The Shallows (3/10)
This movie is so insane, dumb-as-hell, poorly written, poorly acted, and unintentionally hilarious that it makes the term “suspension of disbelief” seem as hard as climbing a mountain in nothing but shorts. It also has so many slow-motion shots that I honestly believe the movie would have been 60-70 minutes long had the shots been sped up. It’s not scary, improbable as hell, and yet extremely entertaining. The climax of this movie honestly had me scream “BULLSHIT” out loud while the rest of the audience around me applauded, as most audiences do. I wasn’t expecting anything great, but I expected something better than this.
