Blu-ray Tuesday: Oscar Contender “Captain Phillips” Sails on 4K Waters

The first slew of Oscar contenders are hitting home this week on home media. Nominated for six Academy Awards, Captain Phillips starring Tom Hanks leads this week’s new selections. Also arriving this week on home media are Blue Jasmine, Machete Kills, Instructions Not Included and In a World…

Like many of its Best Picture counterparts, Captain Phillips is based on a true story. Hanks portrays the titular Phillips, captain of the MV Maersk Alabama, a cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. The Paul Greengrass film comes to Blu-ray from Sony Pictures as a Blu-ray, DVD, UltraViolet combo pack. The Blu-ray, mastered in 4K resolution, features a three-part documentary (one hour) and audio commentary. Best Buy is offering an exclusive steelbook.

Also from  Sony comes Woody Allen’s latest film, Blue Jasmine starring Cate Blanchett. New York socialite Jasmine (Blanchett) moves in with her sister (Sally Hawkins) in San Francisco. Used to the life of luxury, Jasmine has difficulty adjusting to the penniless lifestyle. The film also stars Alec Baldwin, Andrew Dice Clay, Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K. and Peter Sarsgaard. Blue Jasmine is available as a single Blu-ray disc with UltraViolet digital copy.

"Blue Jasmine" (2013) - Blu-ray TuesdayUniversal is releasing grindhouse exploitation sequel, Machete Kills this week to Blu-ray. In this second installment, Machete (Danny Trejo) is recruited by the U.S. government to take down an arms dealer named Voz (Mel Gibson). Michelle Rodriguez pairs up with Machete as they battle against Voz’s henchmen on both sides of the border. Demian Bichir, Lady Gaga, Amber Heard and Charlie Sheen round out the film’s ensemble. Machete Kills is available as a Blu-ray, DVD, UltraViolet combo pack.

2013’s breakout foreign language film, Instructions Not Included also debuts this week. Acapulco ladies’ man, Valentin (Eugenio Derbez) travels to Los Angeles to find the mother to his child that was found on his doorstep. Instructions Not Included arrives on Blu-ray a single Blu-ray disc from Lionsgate Films.

Last up this week is independent film In a World… from Sony. Lake Bell (Black Rock) wrote, directed and starred in the film. Bell play Carol, a female voice talent living in the shadow of her industry legend father (Fred Malamed). She wants to prove to her father that she belongs in the male-dominated field and is worthy to say that classic Don LaFontaine line. In a World… comes to Blu-ray as a single Blu-ray disc.
