A report from Latino-Review has confirmed that The Cabin in the Woods writer and director Drew Goddard is in talks to write and direct the new Spider-Man reboot film.
Over the weekend, rumors had been circulating that a director for the film had been found, but not until now has Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige’s choice been revealed.
Previously, Goddard had been working on a Sinister Six film for Sony, before Sony and Marvel made their big announcement about bringing Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe a couple weeks ago. Even before that, Goddard was attached to Netflix’s Daredevil, a series which will be released in April and takes place in the MCU.
On paper, Goddard definitely seems like a perfect choice for the job. On top of working with Avengers director Joss Whedon on 2012’s unconventional and wildly entertaining horror film The Cabin in the Woods, he has also written many episodes of Whedon’s TV shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Goddard wrote 2008’s Cloverfield, 2013’s World War Z and has produced multiple episodes of Lost and Alias as well.
Goddard has proven himself on every film or TV show he has worked on, so he seems perfectly fit to handle a project as big as the next Spider-Man film.
The site believes that the film will be called The Spectacular Spider-Man, although this has not been confirmed yet either, and also that a relatively unknown actor will be cast as the title character. Reportedly, Marvel and Sony are both looking for younger actors for the role, as they would like to have the story follow Spider-Man while he is still in high school.
In the movie, it looks like Spider-Man will go against Iron Man and “audition” to join the Avengers, while it will also setup the Sinister Six, with the possibility of giving them a spinoff film later.
The character is expected to make his first appearance in the MCU in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, as the comics feature a major storyline involving the character.
The new Spider-Man film will be released on July 28, 2017.
