Oscar-winning actress Marisa Tomei may be coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as she is in talks to play Aunt May in 2017’s Spider-Man reboot.
Tomei, who has starred in such films as The Wrestler, Cyrus and The Ides of March, will be the youngest actress to play Aunt May on the big screen, if she accepts the role. Previously, Sally Field played Aunt May in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, while Rosemary Harris played the role in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy.
In 1993, Tomei won an Academy Award for her performance as Mona Lisa Vito in My Cousin Vinny. Since then, she has been nominated for her roles in both In the Bedroom and The Wrestler.
Currently, the only confirmed cast member for the film is Tom Holland, who was announced last month as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Cop Car director Jon Watts is on board to helm the film, while Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal will produce. The film will be the first team up of both Marvel and Sony in the MCU.
Although Spider-Man will appear in next year’s Captain America: Civil War, the character of Aunt May most likely won’t be introduced until the superhero’s solo film.
The Spider-Man reboot film remains untitled, but is set to be released on July 28, 2017.
