A First Look Trailer for the (Kinda) Dark, Indie Comedy ‘Inbetweening’ Ahead of Its Premiere

Inbetweening: A Kinda Dark Comedy will be showing at the Amazing Fantasy Fest in Buffalo, New York, which runs September 13-19th and we have a first-look trailer for it.

A new (kinda) dark comedy called Inbetweening will have its world premiere as part of the Amazing Fantasy Fest in Buffalo, New York, which runs September 13-19th, and we have a first-look trailer for it.

The film is from the creative mind of filmmaker Mel House, director of Psychic Experiment, Closet Space, and Mystery Spot. Inbetweening is a story about a bi-racial filmmaker named Eric Linson. Eric struggles to make a living even though he had a couple of horror films get distribution. He also is finding it hard to find financing for his next project. If that wasn’t tough enough, Eric encounters potential collaborators who continually throw his identity into question.

“The last decade or so was pretty rough,” says House. “Like, the types of things you just can’t make up. So I did what any self-respecting filmmaker would do, and I wrote a script based on THOSE experiences…plus some others thrown in the mix. Not just the experience of trying to put together a film but also a snapshot of one particular filmmaker’s less-than-idyllic life. I think this is one aspect of the ‘indie film lifestyle’ that we rarely hear about, let alone see dramatized and laid bare onscreen.”

Inbetweening promises not to be your straightforward “quasi-biopic.” It will include dream sequences, animation, and puppetry. House states jokingly, “It is Hollywood Shuffle meets  A Nightmare on Elm Street.” House has assembled a talented cast that includes Debbi Rochon, Brandon Cole, and Angelo Moore of the musical group Fishbone. Music looks to play a major part in the story. Josh Loucka, from the New York City band Shift,  scored Mystery Spot and is back to score Inbetweening. Angelo and House collaborated on a musical number to be included called “Shitshow,” which is about terrible film production experiences. Kelli Scott of Failure plays the drums on that track. Low Coast’s Jeff Caudill also has a song included in the soundtrack.

House states that his previous film, Mystery Spot, and Inbetweening, are “two sides of the same coin…like [the Stephen King novels] Desperation and The Regulators. Both come from the same feelings of frustration, helplessness, and lack of purpose, and they include a lot of the same people if not necessarily the same characters. I wrote MYSTERY SPOT in a fit of pique after not being able to get INBETWEENING funded years ago, so one even kind of begat the other. It’s nice to close the circle.”

If this is anything like Mystery Spot, you will be in for an entertaining ride.
