20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Ridley Scott’s The Martian, a sci-fi adventure film due out later this year.
The film, which is based on a best-selling novel of the same name by Andy Weir, will star Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, Donald Glover and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The film’s official plot is described as follows:
“During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.”
The trailer makes the film look like a cross between 2013’s Gravity and last year’s Interstellar (also starring Damon and Chastain), two intense, visually stunning and memorable films that will both be hard to top.
Scott hasn’t had a ton of luck at the box office or with critics on some of his most recent films, which include The Counselor and Exodus: Gods and Kings. His last directorial effort in the sci-fi genre was 2012’s Prometheus, a polarizing film that many either loved or hated; however, the director is still considered a legend in the genre, having directed such films as Alien and Blade Runner.
Scott, Simon Kinberg, Michael Schaefer and Mark Huffam are producing the film, with Drew Goddard penning the script.
The Martian is set for a November 25, 2015 release date.
