Comic Book Law School 101: Genesis
Getting off on the right foot is key to traveling on the road to success. And this year’s Comic Book Law School is designed to help you navigate the best possible route (and provide help in deciphering the map legend). Noted IP attorney Michael Lovitz,author of The Trademark and Copyright Book comic book, offers the first of three interactive and informative programs, which this year will track the trials and tribulations of (fictional) client Fitzgerald Scott, a fledgling comic book writer, as he traverses the many stages involved in the creation, development, protection, and commercialization of his newest comic book creation, “Shylock Homer” a war-weary poet-turned-detective solving crimes and fighting off mythical creatures as he travels the globe with his colleague Dr. Ulysses in search of his long-lost family. This first installment will focus on “The Basics” in an effort to provide the necessary foundation needed for understanding the various intellectual property rights available to creators and business owners and will include insights on how to protect those rights, focusing on how best to safeguard ideas, creative works, characters, brands, and names, from genesis through publication and distribution, and beyond. Attendees are invited to participate in an interactive discussion about the rights provided under U.S. copyright and trademark laws, including a discussion on the protections these laws provide, the benefits of federal registrations for each, tips on working with collaborators, and issues of joint authorship and work-made-for-hire. Along the way, there will be plenty to learn about the protections available, as well as the numerous potential pitfalls, under the U.S. trademark and copyright systems. This used to be the annual “Sergio and Mark Show” but the name has changed to note that the adventures of Groo the Wanderer are brought to you not just by the award-winning team of Sergio Aragonés and Mark Evanier, but also by Stan Sakai (the creator of Usagi Yojimbo) and the hardest-working man in comics, Tom Luth. They’ll be discussing the new Groo miniseries, the first issue of which is debuting even as you read this, and many upcoming projects. Some feature their silly barbarian, some don’t. But it’s always a treat to hear these brilliant guys, especially the tall one who wrote this panel description.

The Zone Show: Underground 3-D Comics
The late Ray Zone was known as the “King of 3-D Comic Books,” creating 3-D conversions for over 300 comics, including many underground books that he published under his banner “The 3-D Zone,” featuring such artists as Robt. Williams, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, and Basil Wolverton. Zone also hosted a Los Angeles cable-access TV show in the early 1980s where he interviewed many of his artist collaborators. Eric Kurland (CEO of 3-D Space) and Lawrence Kaufman (chairman of the National Stereoscopic Association) will be joined by several of Ray Zone’s friends and colleagues to take a look a look at his 3-D underground work, including video interviews from The Zone Show, not seen in over 30 years and only recently discovered and digitized.

Ghost of Name That Movie: The Sequel
Returning for its fourth straight year of fun, prizes and rare movie clips. A game show where you can be a contestant and win (marginally) valuable prizes! Inkpot Award winner and show creator, John Field has edited a fun-tastic program of 50 different sci-fi, horror, and fantasy film clips, ranging from the 1920s to today. Four contestants will be chosen from the audience to try to guess the names of the movies the clips are from. If any of the panel members cannot guess the clip, the audience gets the chance! That audience member gets a prize as well. Whichever contestant names the most clips will be the grand prize winner. The second to fourth places will get prizes as well.

The 501st Legion: Star Wars Villainous Costuming
An introduction to the creation of fan-made villain costumes from all seven Star Wars movies and beyond. Legion members from the Imperial Sands and Southern California Garrisons will provide an overview of the creative process that bring Stormtroopers, Tusken Raiders, Boba Fett, or Kylo Ren from the silver screen in to reality. Dean Amstutz (ISG membership liaison) will discuss the membership journey, from initial interest through final approval. Lesley Farquhar (ISG commanding officer) will present information on the history, organization. and mission of the 501st Legion as “Bad Guys Doing Good”! Kevin Weir (Imperial Surplus Armor, KW Designs owner) will relate his process for working with hard armor parts. Jazlynne Wilson (ISG member) will speak about soft fabric construction. Dawn Bright(Flagship Eclipse Detachment executive officer) will discuss the process and requirements for bringing a new canon costume into the Legion. Todd Mullin (ISG executive officer) moderates.

George Clayton Johnson Memorial Gathering
Charismatic writer George Clayton Johnson (Ocean’s 11, Twilight Zone, Star Trek) was a fixture at Comic-Con in its early decades. He wrote “The Man Trap” (the very firstStar Trek episode that aired); wrote such memorable TZ episodes as “A Game of Pool” and “Nothing in the Dark” (with Robert Redford as “Mr. Death”); and co-wrote the cult sf novel Logan’s Run with William F. Nolan. GCJ died on Christmas Day 2015 at the age of 86. Friends and fans are invited to share their memories and adventures with George over the past 40 years.
