As another lost at sea movie, Adrift has the added bonus of including a love story between stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin.
Based on the inspiring true story, the trailer begins with shots of gorgeous locales as Woodley’s character says she is looking to “chase adventures” and then spots the dashing Claflin, sailing on by. I mean, how could you not fall in love with that? The two are then spending time and she’s asking him why he likes to sail alone. He says there isn’t another feeling in the world, with the endless horizon ahead of you. Sure enough, Claflin gets an offer to sail to California, 4,000 miles away, and he asks Woodley to “come sail away with her.” Foreshadow much?
They indeed hit some rough seas, which turns into a Category 5 hurricane. There’s that crazy scary shot of the boat at the bottom of a gigantic wave about to hit them. When the skies clear, Woodley saves Claflin, who has been seriously injured, but the two are in major trouble, especially since their boat is cast adrift, and there is no land in sight.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Two free spirits whose chance encounter leads them first to love, and then to the adventure of a lifetime. As the two avid sailors set out on a journey across the ocean, Tami Oldham (Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Claflin) couldn’t anticipate they would be sailing directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. In the aftermath of the storm, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins. With no hope for rescue, Tami must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved. Adrift is the unforgettable story of the resilience of the human spirit and the transcendent power of love.”

Well, since I’m liking Woodley and Claflin together, I’m probably going to be all over this. Adrift hits theaters on June 1.
