See More of the ‘Ready Player One’ Universe in New Trailer

This latest trailer for the upcoming Steven Spielberg sci-fi thriller Ready Player One gives us more glimpses into this cool world, as well as an idea of how high the stakes are going to be.

The basic synopsis for the movie revolves around a not-too-distant futuristic world in which overpopulation is a big problem, and the only escape one has is to enter into a virtual reality world called OASIS. Once in there, you can do anything and be whoever you want to be. When the creator of OASIS James Halliday (Mark Rylance) puts forth a challenge to find an Easter Egg he has hidden, which, if found, will allow the user to obtain his fortune, the race is on. Except, this race becomes one of life or death, naturally.

In the new trailer, we see our hero, Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) – who goes by the name Parzival in OASIS — realize just how deadly the game is, as a slowed-down version of the song “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory plays over. This new thing with trailers having slower versions of songs is a little annoying, but certainly the “Come with Me” theme fits the film.

It also stars Ben Mendelsohn, who looks like some kind of corporate/government baddie (and talked a bit about the movie with We Live a few months ago), and Olivia Cooke as Wade’s love interest. Also listed are Simon Pegg, T.J. Miller, and Letitia Wright, who is currently stealing the show in the just-released Black Panther.

Needless to say, Spielberg’s return to the sci-fi genre is exciting on so many levels – and while the trailers have been impressive, I feel like (and hope) they are just the tip of the iceberg. Oh, and even The Iron Giant makes an appearance. I mean, come on, this has got to be good.

Guess we’ll find out when Ready Player One engages in theaters March 29.
