The Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens panel held at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California kicked off at 10 am on Thursday morning. It was hosted by Entertainment Weekly’s Anthony Breznican. The event was streamed online and around the world so all fans could get a chance to see it.
The first big reveal for the film came from director J.J. Abrams, who said that the desert planet shown in the teaser trailer is not Tatooine but actually a place called Jakoo.
Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy then discussed some of the work behind the film before the new droid BB-8 came out on stage to join R2-D2. Also discussed was how Harrison Ford was not able to join the panel event due to him still recovering from the plane crash he was in.
Cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac joined Abrams and Kennedy on stage. Ridley said that her character Rey is a “scavenger” on Jakoo. Boyega said that his character Finn is a Stormtrooper – possibly joking — but wouldn’t reveal if he is good or bad. Isaac said that his character Poe Dameron is the “best pilot in the galaxy” and has to team up with Finn. The three characters will be the leads in the film it seems.
After some talk about the excitement of the project from Abrams and the others, they left the stage as the new Stormtroopers came on stage to show off the shiny outfits. Original cast members Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, and Mark Hamill then joined them. Fisher said that Leia’s bun hair won’t be returning but that she hopes fans will like the new style. The members mostly just talked about how awesome the fans have been over the years.
The cast, Stormtroopers and droids then all joined for a group photo before Abrams showed a new teaser trailer to the crowd at Anaheim. The trailer can be seen on the Star Wars Youtube channel here.
The trailer has a voice-over by Hamill and includes many new shots, including our first full look at Ford as Han Solo and a shot of Darth Vader’s melted helmet.
The Force Awakens will release on December 18th, 2015.
