NBC’s comedy The Good Place dropped a franchise bombshell this week when Jianyu (Manny Jacinto) ranked the Fast and the Furious movies. As expected, he named Fast Five number one and the emotional Furious 7 second. I was happy he ranked Tokyo Drift and Fast & Furious (part four) tied for third. I know Tokyo Drift is beloved but I’m the Fast & Furious defender so that’s not bad.
After a TCA panel on The Good Place, I asked creator Mike Schur if someone on the writing staff was a big Fast and the Furious fan,and how they determined Jason’s rankings.
“Many of them are, but we also liked that he’s so dumb that he thought Tokyo Drift was as good as whatever the fourth one is,” Schur said. “Because Tokyo Drift is garbage in my opinion.”
I’m not even the most passionate person who will disagree with Schur about Tokyo Drift but it amuses me that he said that. Plus, I got my Fast & Furious above six and the original!
“Honestly, that ended up being that way because number five is number one, number seven is number two and the joke was number three and four are tied for number three,” Schur said. “We just wanted to be as confusing as it could be.”
Perhaps Jason can reasses when The Fate of the Furious opens this year. That is, if The Good Place gets the upcoming Fast and the Furious sequels. Actually, if it’s really The Good Place, they should have all 10 independent of time, and the 11th and 12th they will inevitably make anyway.
The Good Place airs Thursdays at 8:30 on NBC.
