This week, the season really begins to take shape as the Academy announces its Oscar producers, Europe weighs in on some of their best films of the year, and one organization celebrates a great year of documentary filmmaking.

AMPAS has announced the producers for the 93rd Academy Awards telecast. Jesse Collins, Stacey Sher, and Steven Soderbergh will produce the industry’s biggest night. Collins is an Emmy-winning producer who has produced awards shows including the Grammys, BET Awards, and the Soul Train Awards. Sher’s Oscar nominated credits include Django Unchained and Erin Brockovich. Soderbergh won Best Director for the 2000 film Traffic, when he was also nominated for directing Erin Brockovich.
Precursor Updates and International Awards
The European Film Awards present their winners this week, with the major categories being announced on Saturday night. France’s The Big Hit won the prize for European Comedy and the French/Spanish film Josep won for Animated Feature. The nominees for European Film are Another Round, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Corpus Christi, Martin Eden, The Painted Bird, and Undine.
The Cinema Eye, which honors international non-fiction filmmaking, has announced their nominations in key categories. This year’s nominees for Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking are:
