Box Office Preview: “Neighbors” Caught in Spidey’s Tangled Web

"Neighbors" (2014) - Box Office Preview (We Live Film)

Neighbors Feuds with The Amazing Spider-Man 2

by Matt Marshall

The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s 91.6 million opening last weekend wasn’t all that amazing. Still, the superhero flick is expected to fend off all three newcomers this weekend.

The biggest threat to Spidey’s box office crown is the comedy Neighbors, starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. Neighbors pits thirty-something couple, Rogen and Bridesmaids’ Rose Byrne against a frat that moves in next door.

Neighbors is directed by Nicholas Stoller. Stoller’s comedies (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek and The Five-Year Engagement) have garnered critical and financial acclaim in recent years. Neighbors looks to be no exception. An early review here on We Live Film has praised the film for its fast pace and raunchy antics.

Neighbors is set to open Thursday night starting at 8 p.m, expanding into 3,279 theaters this Friday. Neighbors should set a directorial high for Stoller come Sunday with $33 million. After a mixed reaction, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will plummet at least 60% for a $37 million second weekend, edging out Neighbors.

Two other films are due out in smaller release this Friday. Legend of Oz: Dorothy’s Return is the first animated film since Rio 2, but the limited marketing and negative reviews will keep audiences away. Legend of Oz is animated adventure in the Land of Oz. Dorothy returns after her encounter with the Wicked Witch only to find a new threat, the Jester.

To rescue her friends, she teams up with a china doll, a tugboat and a marshmallow man. Legend of Oz features the voice talents of Lea Michele, Dan Aykroyd, Kelsey Grammer, Jim Belushi and Martin Short. Debuting in 2,641 theaters, Legend of Oz will be lucky to break $5 million over the weekend.

Faith-based comedy Moms’ Night Out is the final wide release of the week. In Moms’ Night Out, three moms go out for the night, having a good time until they lose a baby. Moms’ Night Out is rated PG, aiming for a less raunchy demographic than The Other Woman or Neighbors. But in an estimated 1,000 theaters, Moms’ Night Out shouldn’t pull in more than $3 million over the frame.
