When Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby was pushed by from a December 2012 Oscar release to a second week in May sandwiched between anticipated summer sequels, Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness, there was plenty of debate whether or not this most recent take of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel would succeed.
After nearly $145 million run domestically, Gatsby proved to be a surprising box office force and now the stylish Leonardo DiCaprio period piece arrives on Blu-ray to close out the month of August. The Great Gatsby headlines this week’s new releases which also include: Pain & Gain, Kon-Tiki, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Super Buddies.
Based on the beloved classic novel of the same name, The Great Gatsby dives headfirst into the Long Island party scene of Roaring Twenties. Yale graduate Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) settles in as a newcomer to the area, but he quickly becomes wrapped up in the glitz and good times provided by eccentric millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio).
This latest iteration of Gatsby arrives on Blu-ray from Warner Bros. in several formats including a Blu-ray, DVD, UltraViolet combo pack with over two hours of bonus material. A 3-disc 3D edition will also be available as well as a Target exclusive packing in over 20 minutes of additional content. The Great Gatsby also stars Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke and Isla Fisher and is directed by Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!).
From Paramount Home Entertainment comes Michael Bay’s bodybuilding crime comedy, Pain & Gain starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Mark Wahlberg. The events of Pain & Gain are inspired by a series of late 90s articles from the Miami New Times involving local kidnapping and extortion. In addition to Johnson and Wahlberg, Pain & Gain also stars Ed Harris, Rob Corddry, Anthony Mackie and Rebel Wilson. The Blu-ray is packaged as a Blu-ray, DVD, UltraViolet combo pack with no extra content.
Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film earlier this year, Norway’s Kon-Tiki arrives on home media courtesy of Starz/Anchor Bay in a Blu-ray, DVD combo pack. Kon-Tiki is based on the true story of Thor Heyerdhal’s epic 101-day journey across the Pacific Ocean in 1947 on a balsawood raft. Pal Sverre Valheim Hagen stars as the legendary explorer; the film is directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, who will be helming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2015.
Buena Vista Home Entertainment releases two Disney titles to round out the week. First up is The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh from 1977, which compiles various adventures featuring the classic A.A. Milne characters. Pooh is packaged as a Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Copy combo pack. Super Buddies is the latest installment of the canine “Buddies” franchise, this time centered around a superhero angle. Like Pooh, Super Buddies is also released as a Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Copy combo pack.
