Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has just announced the Blu-ray release for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is the second chapter of Peter Jackson’s trilogy. In Smaug, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) continue their journey to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch). Meanwhile, wizard Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen) is summoned on a side quest to uncover what darkness resides in the fortress Dol Guldur.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is released in the United States and Canada on April 8th. The United Kingdom will receive the film one day earlier. Multiple versions of Smaug will be available for purchase with retailer exclusives yet to be announced. Currently, a 2D, 3D and Limited Collector’s Edition have been announced.

The 2D artwork features the theatrical poster, while the 3D artwork is the character poster of Thorin (see above). The Limited Collector’s Edition includes the Gates of Erebor bookends for the Noble Collection. This set is reported to be limited to 25,000 copies.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has grossed over $255 million domestically and $860 milllion worldwide. An Extended Edition of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is still to be expected later this year.
