Following up the highly successful The Jungle Book remake, Disney once again brought another classic back to the big screen for a new generation. Pete’s Dragon is a retelling of Disney’s 1977 musical. Oakes Fegley stars as the titular orphan boy, who is taken in by the green dragon, Elliot. After six years, the boy and the dragon are discovered and not everyone will take kindly to the unexpected friendship.
Pete’s Dragon wasn’t a major hit for Disney this summer, grossing $76.2 million. Still, the family film resonated with several critics, including Scott Menzel. Menzel believes “Pete’s Dragon is destined to become another timeless classic in the Disney film library.” Pete’s Dragon stars Oakes Fegley, Bryce Dallas Howard, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban and Oona Laurence. Disney will be releasing the film as a Blu-ray, DVD, Digital combo pack. Disney and Buena Vista have also released additional information here for the combo pack.
In addition to Pete’s Dragon, Disney and Buena Vista will also be releasing, The BFG as well this week. Directed by Steven Spielberg, The BFG adapts the classic Roald Dahl tale of the same name. In The BFG, a young girl named Sophie is kidnapped by a giant, who turns out to be friendly. Together, the pair attempt to save London from evil giants lurking about. The family film stars Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Bill Hader, Rebecca Hall and Penelope Wilton.
Like Pete’s Dragon, The BFG was another modest hit for Disney, grossing $55.5 million. Some critics were equally receptive. In her review, Ashley Menzel deemed The BFG “the next Big Family Gem from Disney.” Disney and Buena Vista will be releasing the film as a Blu-ray, DVD, Digital combo pack.
Last up for the week is horror hit, Don’t Breathe, from Sony Home Entertainment. As one of the final films of the summer, Don’t Breathe shocked not only critics, but the box office as well. In the film, a group of teenagers break into an elderly man’s home. They expect it to be an easy score, but it’s a greater terror than they imagined. The film is directed by Fede Alvarez, who brought us the 2013 Evil Dead remake. The cast includes Jane Levy, Stephen Lang, Dylan Minnette and Daniel Zovatto.
Reviews for the horror flick were predominately positive. In his review, Scott Menzel stated “Don‘t Breathe is a non-stop thrill ride that will have you gasping for air until the credits roll.” Sony is debuting Don’t Breathe as a Blu-ray, Digital combo pack.
