Box Office: ‘The Boss’ Edges Out ‘Batman v Superman’ with $23.5M

'The Boss' - Melissa McCarthy - Universal

McCarthy Debuts as ‘Boss’ of the Box Office Again

Mixed reviews didn’t stop Melissa McCarthy from defeating the Man of Steel and the Caped Crusader this weekend. In a photo finish weekend, The Boss edged out Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with an estimated $23.5 million. This marks McCarthy’s fifth consecutive $20 million start after (Spy, Tammy, The Heat and Identity Thief).

After two weeks on top, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice settled for second this weekend with $23.4 million. Zack Snyder’s DC tentpole continues to drop hard week after week. Falling 54% from last weekend, Dawn of Justice is still a few million shy of the $300 million milestone. Batman v Superman should pass $300 million on Tuesday or at the latest Wednesday. On the plus side, Batman v Superman became the third largest DC film domestically, passing Snyder’s very own Man of Steel ($291.0 million). With The Jungle Book and The Huntsman: Winter’s War on the horizon, Batman v Superman is looking less and less likely to beat Deadpool ($358.4 million)

Zootopia dipped one spot this weekend to third place, grossing $14.4 million. That makes it the best sixth weekend since Frozen ($19.6 million) in 2013. After six weeks in theaters, the Disney animated hit brought its total up to $296 million. Like Batman v Superman, expect Zootopia to crack the $300 million milestone sometime this week. Even with Disney’s The Jungle Book due out this Friday, Zootopia remains on track for a jaw-dropping $330 million finish.

In its third frame, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 dropped another 43% to fourth place, pulling in another $6.4 million over the weekend. The Nia Vardalos comedy brought its 17-day total up to an estimated $46.8 million. Greek Wedding 2 has yet to make at least 20% of the original film’s $241 million run.

The brand new first-person action flick, Hardcore Henry rounded out the Top 5 with $5.1 million. With a C+ Cinemascore and mixed critic reviews, the Sharlto Copley film is expected to have a quick run in theaters.
